The Minister of Agro-Industry, Arvin Boolell, confirmed at a recent press conference that the cattle imported from Mozambique have been placed in quarantine upon their arrival in Mauritius. This exceptional decision aims to ensure the health safety of the animals and protect animal health on the island.

The cattle, transported by the MV Apex ship, were originally intended for an importer in Guinea. However, following the cancellation of this order, Mauritius agreed to receive these animals. The minister emphasized that this process was carried out in accordance with a strict health protocol to minimize any potential risks related to the importation of live animals.

Quarantine is a standard preventive measure in the context of animal importation, allowing for the verification of the absence of transmissible diseases. Arvin Boolell stressed the importance of these procedures to ensure food safety and public health in Mauritius.

The minister also discussed the legal and regulatory framework surrounding the importation of cattle, indicating that all necessary steps have been followed to ensure the well-being of the animals as well as that of the Mauritian population. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that the cattle meet all required standards before being integrated into the local system.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to protecting the island’s animal resources while meeting the needs of the local market. The importation of cattle, while necessary, must be conducted in compliance with health standards, a point the minister was keen to reaffirm during this press conference.
