The Mauritian Militant Movement is undoubtedly experiencing its worst internal crisis in years. In just forty-eight hours, the party founded by Paul Bérenger in 1969 has seen three of its most emblematic figures leave, followed by eight executive members from its youth branch. What began as a crack has turned into an open fracture.

The Trigger: The Shocking Resignations of the Bérenger Family

It all started on Monday, April 13, when Paul Bérenger himself, the founder and guiding figure of the MMM for over fifty years, announced his resignation from the party’s central committee. In a sober yet meaningful statement, the former Prime Minister cited « irreconcilable differences » with the current leadership regarding the party’s political strategy and its place in the Mauritian opposition landscape.

His daughter Joanna Bérenger, a long-time activist and face of the generational renewal of the MMM, and Chetan Baboolall, the communications officer and considered one of the party’s most influential strategists, submitted their resignations simultaneously. This synchronization was not trivial: it signaled an organized break, not just a moment of anger.

The Reaction from the Youth Militant: An Aggravated Hemorrhage

The following day, Tuesday, April 14, the response came from the grassroots. Eight executive members of the Youth Militant, the youth branch of the MMM traditionally seen as the breeding ground for the party’s future leaders, submitted their collective resignations effective immediately. This strong political act, deliberately symbolic, aims to show that the discontent is not limited to the top of the hierarchy.

In a statement published on social media and widely shared in Mauritian political circles, the eight resigning members condemned « a leadership disconnected from the realities on the ground, unable to embody a credible political project for Mauritian youth. » They also pointed to « the absence of internal democracy » and a culture of « decisions made in closed circles without consultation of the grassroots. »

The Real Reasons Behind a Long-Predicted Crisis

For political observers, this crisis is not a surprise. Tensions have been brewing for several months, fueled by deep strategic disagreements. The central question revolves around the political identity of the MMM: should it remain a progressive leftist party rooted in the working class, or evolve towards a centrist positioning more capable of appealing to urban middle classes?

The electoral defeat of 2024, during the legislative elections won by the Navin Ramgoolam Alliance, had already highlighted the limits of a poorly calibrated electoral strategy. The MMM had achieved its worst results since the 1990s, losing several historical strongholds in working-class constituencies in the industrial belt of Plaines Wilhems and Pamplemousses.

What Future for the MMM?

The pressing question now is the survival of the party as an autonomous political force. Several scenarios are circulating in the political backrooms of Port-Louis. One scenario would see the MMM rebuild around a new, younger leadership, without the historical figures burdened by decades of past. A second, more pessimistic scenario envisions a definitive fragmentation, with some leaders joining other parties or creating new structures.

What is certain is that the current hemorrhage significantly weakens the MMM’s capacity to play a structuring role in the Mauritian opposition. Without internal unity and a clearly defined political project, the party risks entering a cycle of accelerated decline that will be difficult to escape. The next electoral deadline—the municipal elections scheduled for 2027—now represents a crucial test to measure the extent of the damage.
