Arrest of a Skipper for Cannabis Cultivation

A 37-year-old skipper was arrested on August 10 in Petite-Pointe-aux-Piments for cultivating cannabis in his yard, a fact visible to all. This arrest was made possible through reports made to the ADSU (Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit) by a friend of the suspect.
During a search of the suspect’s home, officers discovered 14 cannabis plants, which were carefully arranged in pots at the back of his house. The plants varied in height from 12 centimeters to one meter, indicating regular maintenance.
The skipper was presented before the court the Wednesday following his arrest, where he faced provisional charges for cannabis cultivation. The case has attracted media attention and raised questions about safety and regulations surrounding cannabis cultivation in Mauritius.
