Critical Situation of Drinking Water in Mauritius
The decline in groundwater levels worsens the water crisis on the island.
The situation of drinking water in Mauritius is becoming increasingly concerning. According to recent analyses, groundwater levels have dropped by between 25% and 35%, a situation resulting from insufficient rainfall. This decrease directly affects the availability of water for households and economic activities.
The Water Resources Unit, the body responsible for managing water resources, currently oversees 630 boreholes on the island. These facilities are primarily used to meet domestic water needs. Indeed, about 50% of household water consumption comes from water produced by these boreholes, highlighting the importance of this infrastructure in the daily lives of Mauritians.
The current situation underscores the need for sustainable water management, especially in light of the growing climate challenges that may exacerbate the availability of this precious resource. Authorities must act quickly to raise public awareness about water conservation and explore long-term solutions to ensure a sufficient supply of drinking water.
