Fine for Protection of Elephant Seal at Fort William
A fine of Rs 25 million has been imposed to prohibit approaching the elephant seal spotted at Fort William.
An elephant seal, nicknamed « Jackie » by the teams at the Albion Fisheries Research Centre, has been observed on the rocks at Fort William. This mammal, belonging to the species Mirounga leonina, is classified as « vulnerable » on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of threatened species.
To protect this animal, a fine of Rs 25 million has been imposed on anyone attempting to approach, touch, or feed it. Although this elephant seal is present on the Mauritian coast, officials from the Ministry of Health and Animal Welfare have confirmed that it is in good health and shows no signs of injury.
