Swords, Knives, and Burglaries: A Surge of Violence Shakes the Island
In just a few days, a sword attack in Bagatelle, a jeweler stabbed in Pointe-aux-Piments, and a series of burglaries solved in the West reignite the debate on insecurity in Mauritius.
Three closely related cases, all marked by brutal violence, contribute to an already heightened sense of insecurity among the population. Daylight knife attacks, an injured shopkeeper, and a series of burglaries: the frequency of recent incidents raises questions for Mauritians as well as the effectiveness of police responses.
Daylight Knife Attacks
The first incident occurred in the parking lot of the Bagatelle shopping center, one of the most frequented places on the island. According to Le Mauricien, a 25-year-old woman, sitting in a vehicle, was violently attacked with a knife by an individual she knew. The incident is being treated as an attempted murder. The alleged assailant, identified as Pritvee Lalljee, was on probation at the time of the incident, a fact that fuels criticism regarding the monitoring of individuals who have previously encountered the justice system.
Two days earlier, in Pointe-aux-Piments, a 64-year-old jeweler was attacked in his own store. According to ION News, a 30-year-old woman entered the shop and hid behind a curtain. Armed with two knives, she allegedly lunged at the shopkeeper demanding money, inflicting multiple blows to his head, forearm, and right foot. Alerted by his screams, his sister-in-law and relatives intervened, causing the assailant to flee. Injured, the elderly man was transported to SSRN hospital.
A Police Force Claiming Results
In light of this impression of escalation, law enforcement is highlighting their successes. In the West, reports Le Mauricien, the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) arrested a 21-year-old homeless man suspected of being involved in a series of burglaries committed notably in Quatre-Bornes and Stanley. The suspect was apprehended on Sunday in an abandoned house in Trèfles, Rose-Hill, where he had taken refuge.
These cases depict very different profiles: a presumed vendetta among acquaintances, a predatory attack on a business, and street crime linked to precariousness. They are not connected, but their concentration over a short period creates an anxious atmosphere, especially when violence occurs in spaces considered safe, such as a shopping center or a neighborhood shop.
Beyond the emotional response, these episodes raise fundamental questions: the monitoring of individuals on probation, the protection of isolated shopkeepers, and the care of the homeless. While the arrest made in the West shows a police force capable of quickly solving certain cases, the recurrence of these incidents serves as a reminder that prevention, in the long term, remains the most challenging aspect to strengthen.
