On July 29, a sit-in was organized outside Parliament by three young activists, Malina, Hans, and Shania, to express their disagreement with the ongoing pension reform. This initiative began in the early hours of the morning when Malina, accompanied by her dog Lou-Lou, settled in front of Government House. Her goal was to defend the welfare state and emphasize the importance of maintaining social rights for all.

Malina, a member of the Komin Syndikal Platform, started this peaceful protest around 1 a.m. Throughout the day, she was joined by Hans and Shania, both members of the Confederation of Private Sector Workers (CTSP). Together, they aimed to draw attention to the potential consequences that the pension reform could have on workers and retirees.

This action takes place against a backdrop of increasing social tensions surrounding the issue of pensions in Mauritius. The protesters hope that their voices will be heard and that the government will consider citizens’ concerns before implementing significant changes to the pension system. Their sit-in aims to raise public awareness and mobilize further support against this reform, which they view as unjust.

The young activists expressed their determination to continue their fight for the protection of workers’ rights and to defend the welfare state, an element they consider essential for ensuring a decent life for all Mauritians.
