Adrien Duval, one of the MPs, strongly criticized the fact that explanatory notes, which are crucial for preparing debates, were provided to parliamentarians only on the day of the budget presentation. According to him, this significantly hindered the preparation for discussions, highlighting that the previous government used to allow a 12-day period for preparation. He stated that the postponement of the debates to the following Tuesday was not a sign of democracy, but rather a direct consequence of the delay in distributing the necessary documents.
On his part, Reza Uteem responded to the accusations of lack of transparency made by the opposition leader, Joe Lesjongard. Uteem defended his government’s record and dismissed allegations of a ‘surveillance state’, insinuating that these accusations were unfounded and aimed at diverting attention from the practices of the former regime. He even used a metaphor, stating that ‘Gabbar Singh is on the other side, not here’, to signify that the issues raised by the opposition do not concern the current government.
Lesjongard’s criticisms go beyond preparation issues. He described this debate day as ‘a sad day for the welfare state’, emphasizing the implications that the Finance Bill could have on the well-being of citizens. According to him, the decisions made during these discussions could undermine the very foundations of the welfare state, calling into question the government’s commitment to social support and public services.
