A recent study reveals a worrying trend regarding divorces in Mauritius. Indeed, nearly 47% of recorded separations involve couples whose marriage has lasted less than 10 years. This statistic underscores a growing fragility of marital unions in the country.

According to the Annual Report of the Judiciary 2025, although the total number of divorce applications has slightly decreased, from 3,148 in 2024 to 3,129 in 2025, it is clear that the majority of divorces affect relatively recent couples. Furthermore, among the 3,358 cases processed during this same period, approximately 89% resulted in a pronounced divorce.

This situation raises questions about the factors contributing to the early dissolution of marriages in Mauritius. The reasons could be varied, ranging from financial tensions to differences in values and life goals between partners. The fact that nearly half of divorces involve marriages of less than 10 years may also indicate a need for better preparation and increased support for couples at the beginning of their marital life.

At the same time, the number of pending cases has decreased, from 1,671 to 1,482. This can be interpreted as a sign that the courts are processing divorce applications more efficiently, although it does not change the reality of early separations.

The implications of these figures are significant for Mauritian society, as they suggest a need for early interventions to support struggling couples and potentially reduce the divorce rate in the coming years.
