A survey conducted by YouGov and published by the Daily Telegraph reveals that 59% of Britons believe that the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius would be unfavorable for the United Kingdom. This issue raises concerns among the British population, who question the political and strategic consequences of such a transfer.

The Chagos Islands, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, are currently under British control. Their inhabitants were displaced in the 1960s to allow for the establishment of a U.S. military base on Diego Garcia. The question of sovereignty over the Chagos has become a topic of international debate, especially after a 2019 ruling by the International Court of Justice recommended that the UK return the islands to Mauritius.

In this survey, respondents expressed fears about the impact that the return could have on the UK’s national security, as well as on its diplomatic relations. Only 22% of participants support the idea of returning the Chagos to Mauritius, while 19% remain undecided.

The British government has so far maintained its position, stating that the issue of sovereignty is complex and requires thorough discussions. The results of this survey could influence future debates regarding British policy towards the Chagos and their population.
