Road Safety: Measures Planned for the M1 Highway
The Ministry of Transport is planning measures to prevent accidents involving heavy goods vehicles on the M1 highway.
In response to the increase in accidents on the M1 highway, particularly those involving heavy goods vehicles and buses, the Ministry of Transport in Mauritius is exploring the implementation of a safety device. This initiative follows several recent incidents, primarily due to brake failures in these heavy vehicles, especially on the descent between Sorèze and Pailles.
To address this concerning situation, the project proposes the creation of an Emergency Escape Ramp. This device aims to provide a safe escape route for out-of-control vehicles to quickly leave the roadway. In the event of brake failure, this ramp could reduce the risk of serious accidents for both heavy goods vehicle drivers and other road users.
The authorities note that road safety is an increasingly important priority, especially with the rise in heavy goods vehicle traffic on Mauritian roads. Discussions surrounding this project demonstrate the government’s commitment to act swiftly to minimize the dangers associated with heavy vehicle traffic.
In summary, the establishment of this emergency escape ramp could represent a significant step towards improving safety on the M1 highway, thereby helping to reduce the number of accidents related to heavy goods vehicles in this area.
