Mauritius’ Trade Deficit Reaches Rs 113.1 Billion in the First Half of 2026
Figures reveal a worsening trade imbalance in Mauritius, with a deficit up 12.5% compared to the previous year.

The trade deficit of Mauritius has seen a significant increase, reaching Rs 113.1 billion during the first half of 2026, according to a report published by Statistics Mauritius on August 26. This alarming situation is the result of imports totaling Rs 167.1 billion, while exports stand at only Rs 54 billion.
This trend of deteriorating trade balance has intensified during the second quarter of the year. Between April and June, imports continued to grow, further exacerbating the imbalance. In comparison, the trade deficit for the first six months of 2025 was Rs 100.5 billion, indicating that the gap has widened by 12.5% compared to the previous year.
This situation raises concerns about the economic health of Mauritius, as the country faces challenges related to its trade balance. The figures indicate an increased reliance on imports, which could have implications for the island’s economic stability and trade policy.
Authorities will need to consider strategies to boost exports and reduce the deficit to ensure sustainable long-term economic growth.
