Since the beginning of 2023, the Mauritian rupee has experienced significant depreciation against the US dollar. According to data provided by CareEdge Ratings and reported in the Mauritius Economic Update, the average exchange rate changed from Rs 48.30 per dollar in June to Rs 47.90 in July. This slight improvement of 0.8% in July, while positive, is not enough to offset the overall decline of the Mauritian currency.

In total, the rupee has recorded a decline of 2.9% against the dollar since January. This situation raises concerns about the stability of the currency and its potential impact on the Mauritian economy.

The depreciation of the rupee can have various consequences on the local economy, particularly by influencing the cost of imports and affecting the purchasing power of Mauritian consumers. Experts emphasize that, despite the recovery observed in July, pressure on the rupee remains constant, foreshadowing upcoming challenges for the country’s economic stability.

Fluctuations of the rupee are also closely monitored by economic stakeholders, who are awaiting measures from the government to stabilize the currency and prevent further deterioration of the situation. Analysts believe it is crucial for authorities to implement effective strategies to counter this negative trend and support the rupee in the future.
