Concerns Surrounding the Modernization of the Mauritian Port

The modernization project of the Mauritian port, which includes the construction of the Island Container Terminal, has raised concerns among the population, particularly regarding its implications for employment. This project, estimated at around Rs 47.3 billion, is part of a strategic partnership between Mauritius and India and represents an important step in the evolution of the island’s port infrastructure.

The project plans for the creation of a 50-hectare terminal, a 1.2-kilometer quay, and a breakwater, with construction expected to last between six to eight years. Included in the Port Master Plan 2024, this project adds to a series of seven major initiatives aimed at modernizing the port, with a total investment of Rs 56.3 billion.

Concerns from workers and unions focus on the possibility of job losses due to increased mechanization and automation of port operations.
