The National Youth Parliament: 75 Young People for the Future of Mauritius

On August 28, the National Assembly of Mauritius hosted the fifth edition of the National Youth Parliament (NYP), an event that brought together 75 young people aged 14 to 23. Over two days, these youths had the opportunity to speak on crucial themes for the future of the island, stepping into the shoes of parliamentarians.
Among the topics discussed were artificial intelligence, food security, sustainable development, as well as issues of peace, justice, and strong institutions. These themes were chosen to reflect the concerns and aspirations of Mauritian youth, who find themselves at a decisive turning point in their history.
Nooremubeen Oozeerally, a student at the Royal College of Port Louis, particularly made an impression with a speech on meritocracy in Mauritius. He denounced the favoritism that, according to him, has become cultural on the island, stating that phrases like « Mo konn enn dimoun » can significantly impact the opportunities available to young people. His intervention highlighted the need to build a fairer system, where merit prevails over personal relationships.
Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, present at the opening of the event, emphasized the importance of the youth’s voice in decision-making. He encouraged participants to freely express their ideas and concerns, adding that their contributions are essential for shaping the island’s future policies.
The National Youth Parliament also allowed for an exploration of the challenges faced by Mauritian youth, particularly regarding employment, education, and civic participation. Young participants were invited to share their visions and formulate concrete recommendations to improve the current situation.
This initiative aims to create a space for dialogue and engagement, where young people can not only express their opinions but also familiarize themselves with the democratic process. The NYP is seen as an essential platform to encourage youth participation in the political and social life of the island.
