The road safety data for the first half of 2026 is particularly concerning. According to a report published by Statistics Mauritius, between January and June, the country recorded a total of 21,845 road accidents. This figure represents a 10.9% increase compared to the 19,696 accidents reported during the same period in 2025.

Even more alarming is the significant rise in serious accidents. Indeed, 1,149 accidents resulting in injuries were reported, marking a 51.2% increase compared to the previous year. This situation has led to a tragic toll of 69 deaths on Mauritian roads over these six months, highlighting a worrying trend in road safety.

Authorities and road safety organizations are urged to take action to counter this rise in serious accidents. Awareness campaigns and enhanced enforcement measures could be considered to improve the safety of road users. The current situation raises questions about driver behavior and the effectiveness of existing regulations.

The report from Statistics Mauritius, published on August 28, underscores the urgency of collective action to reverse this trend. Road accidents continue to severely impact the Mauritian community, and it is imperative to find sustainable solutions to protect the lives of citizens.
