The Health Minister, Anil Bachoo, recently announced that between 200 and 300 new cancer cases are recorded each month in Mauritius. This revelation has raised significant concerns regarding public health on the island.

The data provided by Anil Bachoo during a screening campaign held on August 22 highlights the growing scale of the problem. These screening campaigns, aimed at identifying non-communicable diseases, have been in place for about a year and have already allowed nearly 15,000 people to benefit from health examinations.

The minister specified that screening efforts are essential in combating this disease that increasingly affects Mauritians. Despite the implementation of these initiatives, the persistence of such a rate of new cases raises questions about the associated risk factors and the need for increased health awareness and prevention.

Health authorities are called to intensify their actions to address this issue, particularly by strengthening awareness campaigns on the benefits of early screening and the preventive measures to be adopted.

This alarming situation underscores the importance of a proactive approach to improve public health in Mauritius and reduce the number of cancer cases in the years to come.
