The issue of the cost of living in Mauritius is raising increasing concerns among experts and activists, who denounce the significant impact of rising prices on households. During a debate show on August 20, activist Jonathan-André Chatigan highlighted the growing frustration of Mauritians, contradicting the claims of Commerce Minister Michaël Sik Yuen, who labeled some observations regarding price increases as « totally false. »

According to Chatigan, the reality is quite different for a portion of the population, who directly feel the increase in costs, particularly that of gasoline, which inevitably affects family budgets. This precarious situation prompts households to cut back on their spending, sometimes at the expense of their food.

Gireesh Gendah, a taxation expert, also shared alarming observations during the same debate. He reported cases in Curepipe where individuals, due to rising prices, find themselves buying animal feed, illustrating the growing financial pressure on families. Gendah emphasized that this situation is indicative of the economic challenges many Mauritians are facing, highlighting the urgency for a government response to this crisis.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth criticized the current economic management during a gathering of his party, the MSM, in Sainte-Croix. Jugnauth sarcastically commented on the state of the economy, using a metaphor to describe ineffective management, suggesting that the current approach is only worsening the country’s economic situation.

These statements highlight a climate of growing discontent among the population, who are feeling the full impact of inflation and price increases. Experts agree that it is essential for the government to take measures to mitigate these effects and support struggling households.

In conclusion, as economic pressure continues to intensify, the voices of activists and experts play a crucial role in alerting to the reality faced by many Mauritians. The need for swift and effective action cannot be underestimated, as the current situation threatens not only the well-being of households but also social stability in Mauritius.
