The Mauritius Digital Promotion Agency reports a rise in online scams, with 913 cases recorded in 2025.
The Mauritius Digital Promotion Agency (MDPA) has recently released alarming figures regarding online scams in Mauritius. In 2025, the country recorded a total of 913 cases of « online scams, » marking a concerning trend compared to previous years.
To contextualize this increase, it is important to recall the statistics from previous years: 2024 recorded 927 cases, a slight increase from 2023, which had 847 cases. In 2022, the number of cases was 547, while in 2021, 368 cases were reported. The rise in online scams is therefore significant, especially considering that in 2018, only 18 cases were recorded.
- 2018 – 18 cases
- 2019 – 71 cases
- 2020 – 232 cases
- 2021 – 368 cases
- 2022 – 547 cases
- 2023 – 847 cases
- 2024 – 927 cases
- 2025 – 913 cases
These figures, published on the MDPA’s website, highlight the need for increased vigilance among Internet users. With the rise of digital technology, online security has become a major issue, and it is crucial for citizens to be informed about the risks and the measures to take to protect themselves against these scams.
In response to this situation, the MDPA may consider strengthening its awareness campaigns to educate the public about the methods used by scammers and the precautions to take when conducting online transactions. Collaboration with other organizations and the implementation of cybersecurity training could also be important steps to counter this rise in scams.
