Drop in Mare aux Vacoas Water Level Raises Concerns
The Mare aux Vacoas reservoir, essential for water supply in Mauritius, continues to see its level decrease, reaching only 40% of its capacity.
The Mare aux Vacoas reservoir, which plays a crucial role in the water supply of Mauritius, is currently in a worrying situation. According to the latest data provided by the Water Resources Commission (WRC), the water level of Mare aux Vacoas has dropped to only 10.35 million cubic meters, representing 40% of its total capacity of 25.89 million cubic meters. This situation was recorded on August 17, 2026.
The comparison with the previous year is alarming. On the same date in 2025, the reservoir showed a filling rate of 89.9%, or 23.28 million cubic meters. In one year, the reservoir has thus lost 12.93 million cubic meters, equivalent to a decrease of 49.9 percentage points. These figures raise concerns about the availability of water for domestic and agricultural needs in the coming months.
The significant drop in water level is attributed to several factors, including unfavorable weather conditions and a lack of rainfall. Local authorities and the WRC are closely monitoring the situation, as a reservoir at this level could lead to water restrictions for consumers and an impact on agriculture, a sector already vulnerable to climate variations.
In this context, it is essential for the population to be aware of the situation and adopt responsible water consumption behaviors. Water management advice and awareness campaigns are more necessary than ever to encourage sustainable practices and avoid a supply crisis.
WRC officials have also emphasized the importance of proactive water resource management, particularly through rainwater harvesting and improving distribution infrastructure. The current situation at Mare aux Vacoas serves as a warning about the need for long-term planning to ensure water security in Mauritius.
