Transition to Electric Buses at Rose Hill Transport

Rose Hill Transport (RHT) recently announced its intention to deploy 20 electric buses on the roads over the next five years, as part of a project called Helios. The launch of this project took place in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Osman Mahomed, and is part of an effort to make public transport more sustainable.

In addition to the introduction of these eco-friendly vehicles, the Helios project also includes the establishment of a solar energy production capacity of 5.5 megawatts, spread across three different sites. This initiative aims to power the new buses while reducing the company’s carbon footprint.

The total investment cost for the solar component is estimated at Rs 1.7 billion. However, despite these advances towards a more environmentally friendly fleet, questions remain about the profitability of this transition. Experts emphasize that the economic efficiency of the investment still needs to be proven, particularly regarding the operating costs of electric buses compared to their combustion counterparts.

The issue of profitability is crucial, as the success of this initiative will depend not only on public acceptance of the new vehicles but also on their ability to operate effectively within the existing transport network. Indeed, the shift to electric buses may require significant adjustments to the company’s infrastructure and operations.

Authorities and RHT officials will therefore need to closely monitor the impact of these changes on operating costs and user satisfaction. As the world increasingly turns to sustainable transport solutions, the successful implementation of this project could serve as a model for other transport companies in Mauritius and beyond.
