Hunger Strike by the Platform Komin Sindikal for Pension Reforms
Mauritian unions call for negotiations on pension reform in response to a tense social climate.
The Platform Komin Sindikal (PKS), which includes several unions such as the FTU, GWF, MLC, and FPBOU, has initiated a hunger strike to demand reforms concerning the Basic Retirement Pension (BRP). This movement was started by Atma Shanto, a representative of the FTU, in response to what they consider inappropriate measures in the Finance Bill currently under discussion.
This Monday, a delegation from the PKS was received at the State House by the President of the Republic, Dharam Gokbool. The unions expressed their desire for the head of state to send the Finance Bill back to Parliament to remove the provisions related to pension reform and to reopen negotiations. This request comes amid rising tensions within Mauritian society.
According to union representatives, the proposed changes to pensions could have negative consequences on the well-being of workers and retirees. They emphasize that the BRP is a crucial element of financial security for many citizens, and any reform must be carefully examined and discussed. Shanto’s hunger strike highlights the concerns of workers regarding reforms they deem rushed and lacking consultation.
The unions hope that this action will draw attention to their demands and encourage the government to consider their concerns. They believe that open and constructive dialogue is necessary to address issues related to pensions and social security.
Members of the PKS continue to press for discussions on pension reform to be reopened, underscoring the importance of protecting the rights of workers and retirees in the context of upcoming legislative changes.
