The Mauritian government recently announced a significant reform of the income tax as part of the Finance Bill. This new measure aims to establish a more progressive tax system by increasing tax rates for the highest incomes.

According to the details of this reform, the first Rs 500,000 of taxable income will remain tax-exempt. For incomes between Rs 500,001 and Rs 1,000,000, a tax rate of 10% will be applied. Incomes between Rs 1,000,001 and Rs 12,000,000 will be subject to a rate of 20%. In contrast, any income exceeding Rs 12 million per year will be taxed at a rate of 35%.

This initiative aims to ease the tax burden on the middle class while increasing the contribution from wealthier households. The government hopes that this new tax structure will generate additional revenue to fund development projects and improve public services.

The implementation of this new tax scale is eagerly awaited, and discussions are already underway regarding its implications for the Mauritian economy. Experts are questioning how this reform could influence the investment and savings behaviors of the affected individuals.

Meanwhile, the Council of Ministers has also approved other measures as part of the Finance Bill, which are expected to be debated soon in the National Assembly. These measures include reforms affecting pensions, aiming to replace the Basic Retirement Pension with the State Age Pension (SAP) and to introduce a new pension age according to a schedule defined by law.

In conclusion, this tax reform could mark an important turning point in Mauritius’s economic policy, promoting a fairer distribution of resources while ensuring better allocation of public funds for the country’s development.
