Ambulance Availability Issues in Mauritius

According to reported information, out of a fleet of 65 ambulances managed by the Ministry of Health, only 40 are operational. This means that 25 vehicles are out of service, which could significantly impact the emergency response capacity.
Among the 25 ambulances that are not operational, 20 are undergoing repairs or maintenance, while five others are deemed too old or too damaged to be put back into circulation. This situation raises questions about the capacity of the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU) to respond effectively to increasing demands, especially during peak times.
The SAMU is essential for ensuring emergency interventions, transfers between healthcare facilities, and medical evacuations. The reduction in the number of operational ambulances could therefore compromise the quality of care and the speed of interventions, which is particularly concerning in a context where every minute counts in a medical emergency.
